Taylor Swift and Drake Silenced on TikTok! Music Giant UMG Pulls the Plug After Fiery Showdown

Universal Music Group (UMG) has initiated the removal of music catalogs belonging to artists represented by the label, such as Taylor Swift, Drake, and Olivia Rodrigo, from TikTok following the breakdown of negotiations to renew licensing agreements earlier this week. The previous licensing deal between UMG and TikTok expired on January 31st.

UMG accused TikTok on Tuesday of pressuring it to accept an unfavorable deal that did not address the record label’s concerns regarding fair compensation for artists and songwriters, protections against AI-generated music, and online safety measures to shield artists from “hate speech, bigotry, bullying, and harassment.” In response, TikTok expressed disappointment at UMG’s decision to withdraw from a platform with over a billion users, accusing the label of prioritizing its own financial interests over those of its artists and songwriters.

As a result of the standoff, UMG-owned music used in TikTok videos will now be muted, and users seeking to replace the removed tracks will need to select alternatives from music labels other than UMG.
